About SunPath 3D
SunPath 3D is a free web app, with no sign-up and no cookies, that shows the path of the sun and moon in 3D for any place and any date, along with static pages for 158 cities in 11 languages.
What is calculated
- Sun: sunrise, sunset, dawn and dusk, golden hour, solar noon, azimuth, altitude, shadow length (SunCalc algorithm, J. Meeus’s formulas; accurate to about 1 minute).
- Moon: phases, illumination, moonrise and moonset, supermoons (SunCalc and Astronomy Engine; a few minutes).
- Eclipses: local circumstances, central path, countries crossed (Astronomy Engine, Natural Earth borders).
- Terrain: actual horizon up to 30 km away, sunrise and sunset behind the mountains (Terrarium elevation tiles, about 100 m).
- Time zones: IANA database, daylight saving time included.
What is not
Buildings and vegetation are not taken into account in the tables (they are in the map’s 3D shadows view). Near the polar circles, where the sun skims the horizon, accuracy decreases.
Data and privacy
No account, no cookies. Audience measurement is anonymous and hosted in Switzerland; the places viewed are only counted on a grid of about 100 km.
